Tank Tightness Testing
Non-volumetric acoustic testing with the Estabrook EZY 3 Locator Plus, with Xerxes Truchek hydrostatic interstitial testing for compatible double-wall systems.
Manufacturer-certified · Testing UST & AST systems since 1997 · Serving 13 states and expanding
Tank tightness testing for in-service and out-of-service underground storage tanks. Single-wall, double-wall, and interstitial tank configurations are covered using the applicable method.
Testing Method
Non-Volumetric Testing — Estabrook EZY 3 Locator Plus
PTTI uses the EZY 3 Locator Plus as the primary tank tightness test method. The locator attaches to an isolation tree mounted at the tank top. The isolation tree carries a liquid sensor at the end, a microphone, and the components needed to isolate the tank and apply pressure.
The technician applies negative pressure to the tank, then uses the EZY 3 Locator Plus with headphones to identify audible acoustic signatures from inside the tank.
Volumetric Interstitial Testing — Xerxes Truchek
For compatible Xerxes double-wall tank systems, Truchek uses the hydrostatic monitoring system to assess the tank walls.
- Equipment
- EZY 3 Locator Plus (primary); Xerxes Truchek (secondary, where applicable).
- Frequency
- When required by state or federal regulatory agencies.
- Deliverable
- A tank tightness test record documenting the method used and the result, completed according to the applicable Estabrook or Xerxes Truchek procedure and the receiving agency’s requirements.

Tank Tightness Testing, frequently asked.
What is the difference between tank tightness and line tightness testing?
Tank tightness testing evaluates the tank. Line tightness testing evaluates the product lines. They are separate tests on separate components.
What method does PTTI use for tank tightness?
The primary method is non-volumetric acoustic testing with the EZY 3 Locator Plus, applying negative pressure and using headphones to identify audible acoustic signatures inside the tank. For compatible Xerxes double-wall tank systems, Truchek uses the hydrostatic monitoring system to assess the tank walls.
